How to Get Those Stains off The Wall

You have never really paid too much attention to the wall, but now that you finally did, you stare at it in disbelief. You never imagined that so much dirt and stain could accumulate on it. But before the marks on the wall get any worse, it’s time to treat them so that they will come off.

Painted walls

  • Wash off fingerprints and scuff marks with diluted dishwashing liquid. Rub the liquid over the mark and then rinse thoroughly. You can also use a homemade solution of two tablespoons of white vinegar or ammonia diluted in one quart of warm water.
  • Remove grease with a strong detergent solution which contains a little paint thinner. You can also use a kitchen cleaner.
  • For writings on the wall, determine first what writing instrument was used. If it’s ballpoint ink, use denatured alcohol or paint thinner. For wax crayon, you can try removing the mark with an eraser. If it’s felt-tip pen or marker, wash off with detergent.
  • If you can’t identify the stain, treat it like ordinary stain. For walls painted with water-base paints, dust the stain, wash with weak detergent solution, rinse and dry. Do it one part at a time. For walls painted with oil-grease paint, dust the stain, wash with detergent solution and rub residual stain with fine steel wool or cut lemon.
  • Stubborn stains have to be covered with a very thin coat of leftover paint.

Wall Coverings

  • Treat grease according to the kind of wallpaper or wall covering you have. For washable and nonwashable wall coverings, dab with a blotting paper or a paper towel under a warm iron. You can also sprinkle talcum powder or baking soda on the area, allow it to dry and then brush off. If you have vinyl wall coverings. Simply dab with dry cleaning fluid or paint thinner follow with detergent and water.
  • Dirt and grease stain on washable wallpaper is easier to remove. Simply sponge the area with a solution of mild liquid soap and cold water, rinse with cold water, then wipe dry.
  • Remove wax crayon marks by sponging with dry cleaning fluid. Then either rinse with soap and water or wipe with a damp cloth. You may also cover the area with blotting paper or paper towel and run a warm iron over it to let the paper absorb the wax. The color stain left can then be treated with paint thinner or moistened baking soda on a damp cloth.
  • For ink marks, try blotting and washing with detergent and hot water. But they will never come off completely.
  • For unidentified stains, try rubbing over with stale bread or use an eraser. If the stain does not come off, sponge with mild detergent solution.

Wood Paneling

  • To remove graffiti on the wall, try using a mild detergent solution. Follow with paint thinner on a cotton ball. Note, however, that any treatment that you do on wood paneling will discolor the wood. So, to bring the wood back to its color, use wood stain.
  • Remove unidentified stains from wax-finished wood paneling with furniture polish.

Brick wall

  • Get rid of efflorescence or white powdery deposits by brushing with a dry paint brush. You can also try wiping it away with warm water.
  • Sponge grease marks with paint thinner.
  • For writings on the wall, use paint remover. Give it time to work on the stain, and then scrape it off and wash with detergent solution. In case of stubborn stain, use sandpaper on it.
